FAQ
Questions, answered.
Does Eco Spec smell?
Very little. It has no VOCs, the ingredients that give conventional paint its smell, and Benjamin Moore says its low odour completely clears within an hour of application (Flat, Eggshell and Semi-Gloss). Ventilate the room while you paint.
What do zero VOC and zero emissions mean?
Eco Spec has 0 g/L of VOCs, even after it's tinted, and is CDPH emissions certified. That means fewer airborne contaminants that can smell or irritate painters and the people living or working in the space.
Is Eco Spec good for a nursery?
It's a popular choice for nurseries. It's Benjamin Moore's greenest and lowest-odour paint, with zero VOCs and zero emissions, and it's certified asthma & allergy friendly®. Paint ahead of time if you can, ventilate, and let the room dry before it's used.
Is it certified asthma & allergy friendly?
Yes. Eco Spec is certified under the asthma & allergy friendly® Certification Program, and it's also Green Seal® certified and backed by Benjamin Moore's Green Promise®.
Can I paint while living in the house?
Its low odour makes it a good fit for painting occupied homes, condos and rentals. Keep the room ventilated, and close it off until the paint is dry to the touch, usually ½–1 hour.
Which finish should I choose?
Flat for ceilings and low-traffic walls, Eggshell for most walls, Pearl for kids' rooms, kitchens and bathrooms, and Semi-Gloss for trim, doors and railings. All four are the same price.
How much paint do I need?
A 3.79 L can covers 400–450 sq ft per coat. A 12 × 12 ft room with 8 ft ceilings, one door and one window has about 350 sq ft of wall, so two coats take about two 3.79 L cans. Use the paint calculator above for your room.
Do I need a primer?
Sound, previously painted walls only need bare spots primed. On new drywall, Benjamin Moore recommends Eco Spec Interior Primer for a fully low-odour system. Ask us to order it, or use Fresh Start.
Is it durable and washable?
Yes. After a 2-week cure it can be washed, and it resists common household and healthcare cleaners and disinfectants. It also has a mildew-resistant coating, which is why hospitals and clinics use it.
What colours and sizes are available? Do you ship?
Any Benjamin Moore colour except Color Stories (CSP), in 3.79 L cans. Tinted paint is made to order, so it's final sale. We ship across Canada, free on most orders over $249, or pick up free at our Rockwood Village store in Mississauga.
