Dumond FAQ
1Smart Strip Advanced or Peel Away 1: which should I buy?
Use Smart Strip Advanced for latex, acrylic, oil and water-based coatings, stains and varnishes. Use Peel Away 1 when the base coats are older oil, alkyd or lead-based paint. Peel Away 1 is not designed for latex, acrylic or epoxy only. If you are unsure, start with the test kit.
2How long does Dumond paint remover take to work?
Dumond lists 1 to 24 hours for Smart Strip Advanced, and 12 to 24 hours for Peel Away 1 at 50 to 90 F (10 to 32 C). Peel Away 1 can take 24 to 48 hours at 35 to 49 F. Always test a small area first to find your dwell time.
3Do I need laminated paper?
Dumond recommends it with all its paint removers. It keeps the remover from drying out, speeds removal and helps clean-up. Peel Away 1 needs it, and each Peel Away 1 container already includes some. For other jobs, add laminated paper. Dumond suggests about 6 sheets per gallon.
4Can Peel Away 1 remove lead paint?
Dumond says Peel Away 1 is designed for older oil, alkyd and lead-based paints. Dumond makes no lead-safety claim for Smart Strip Advanced. When coatings may contain lead, follow all local rules for containment, handling and disposal, and read the product label and Safety Data Sheet.
5Do I have to neutralize after stripping?
Peel Away 1 must be neutralized before you repaint. The kit includes Citri-Lize neutralizer and a pH test kit, and the surface should read pH 6 to 8. Smart Strip Advanced is cleaned off with water, using a scraper, brush or pressure washer, then rinsed thoroughly.
6What temperature can I use it in?
Dumond rates Smart Strip Advanced for 40 to 90 F (4.4 to 32.2 C) and Peel Away 1 for 50 to 90 F (10 to 32 C). In Canada, that means spring to early fall for most outdoor stripping. Cool weather slows both products.
7Which Watch Dog graffiti remover should I use?
Use Watch Dog Porous on unpainted brick, concrete, stone and bare wood. It is not for painted or stained surfaces. Use Watch Dog All Purpose for sealed surfaces such as lockers and cabinets. Test a small area first.
