Circa 1850 Heavy Body Paint & Varnish Remover – Non-Drip Gel Stripper

Circa 1850 Heavy Body Paint & Varnish Remover is a thick, non-drip gel that strips multiple layers of oil, latex and epoxy paint, varnish, polyurethane, moisture-cure finishes, lacquer and shellac. It clings to walls, doors, trim and other vertical surfaces, stays wet longer and is ideal for exterior work. It's non-flammable and almost odourless, and it's safe for fine furniture: it won't raise the grain, harm most glue joints or veneers, or damage the patina.

Key Features

  • Thick gel that stays put on vertical surfaces.
  • Stays wet longer on thick, layered finishes.
  • Ideal for exterior doors, railings and trim.
  • Non-flammable and almost odourless.
  • Safe for antiques: no grain raising, and gentle on veneers, glue joints and patina.
  • No neutralizing needed.

Where to Use It

Walls, doors, trim, mouldings, railings, siding and furniture, indoors or out. Not for dye stains. It may soften plastic and fibreglass. For intricate pieces or indoor furniture, Circa 1850 Furniture Stripper is the better fit.

Sizes

500 mL, 946 mL and 3.78 L. The 18.9 L pail is a special order.

Heavy Body or Furniture Stripper?

Heavy Body is a thick gel for vertical, exterior and heavily layered surfaces. Furniture Stripper is a faster liquid for flat surfaces and fine detail, and it needs no wash afterwards. Both are non-flammable and safe for antiques.

Application Guide
  1. Set up. Work out of direct sun and wind. Wear Circa 1850 Stripping Gloves and eye protection, and cover the area below with plastic or foil.
  2. Open carefully. Contents may be under pressure. Cool a warm container first, cover the cap with a rag and open slowly.
  3. Apply. Pour some remover into a metal or foil container and brush on a generous coat over 1–4 sq. ft.
  4. Wait about 15 minutes, or until the finish blisters. Keep the area completely wet, and reapply if it starts to dry out.
  5. Scrape off the finish. The Circa 1850 Maple Scraper won't gouge the wood.
  6. Repeat on very thick finishes.
  7. Clean off residue with finishing pads or steel wool dipped in remover.
  8. Wash the surface with Circa 1850 Furniture Stripper or mineral spirits.
  9. Let it dry, then sand lightly before staining or refinishing.
FAQ
1What finishes does Heavy Body remove?

Oil, latex and epoxy paint, oil and latex varnish, polyurethane, moisture-cure finishes, lacquer, shellac and opaque stain. It won't remove dye stains.

2Will it stay on walls and doors?

Yes. It's a thick gel made for vertical surfaces, so it clings instead of running.

3Can I use it outdoors?

Yes. It's ideal for exterior work. Avoid direct sun and wind, which dry it out faster.

4How long do I leave it on?

About 15 minutes, or until the finish blisters. Keep the surface wet the whole time, and reapply to thick finishes.

5Do I need to wash the surface afterwards?

Yes, a quick wipe. Once the finish is off, wash the surface with Circa 1850 Furniture Stripper or mineral spirits. No neutralizing is needed. Let it dry and sand lightly before refinishing.

6Is it safe for antique furniture?

Yes. It won't raise the grain, harm most glue joints or veneers, or damage the patina.

7Is it flammable, and does it smell?

It's non-flammable and almost odourless. Still keep it away from open flames and work with ventilation.

8Can I use it on plastic or fibreglass?

Be careful. It may soften plastic and fibreglass, so test first or avoid those surfaces.
