Why Collection Alkyd

The old-school finish painters still love.

Trim, doors, cabinets and railings get grabbed, bumped and wiped every day. A traditional alkyd enamel flows out smooth, holds sharp edges and dries to a hard, washable satin.

01

Smooth finish

Superb levelling and hiding, so brush marks flow out. It clings to sharp edges and corners and resists sagging on doors and vertical bars.

02

Tough and washable

Excellent washability once cured, plus rust protection on properly primed steel and iron.

03

Your colour

A low-lustre satin, tinted to most Benjamin Moore colours, from classic black and charcoal to whites and deep greens.

For interior trim, doors, cabinets and metal, including steel, wrought iron and aluminum. Prime galvanized metal first. For outdoor metal, see Coronado Rust-A-Void.

How much do I need?

Enter the width and height of what you're painting. We'll work out the cans, using 500 sq ft per 3.79 L, the low end of Benjamin Moore's coverage so you don't run short.

Set up for a 3 × 7 ft door, both sides (6 × 7 ft), with 2 coats. For trim, add up the length of each run and multiply by its width. For open railings, width × height gives a generous estimate.

Ready-mixed, no tinting needed

Choosing a colour? Whites like White Dove are the classic trim and door picks, and black or deep charcoal hide scuffs best on railings. Like all alkyds, whites and very pale colours can yellow over time in dim spots. Screen colours are a guide, so try a colour sample first.

How to apply

Get a smooth, hard finish.

  1. Clean it well. Remove wax, oil, grease, dust, rust and loose paint, and dull any glossy areas with fine sandpaper or a sanding sponge.
  2. Prime bare surfaces. Bare wood: Benjamin Moore's oil-based Fresh Start Undercoater (K032). Steel and iron: Ultra Spec HP Acrylic Metal Primer (FP04) or Super Spec HP Alkyd Metal Primer (KP06). Galvanized metal and aluminum: clean with an oil and grease emulsifier, then prime with FP04.
  3. Ventilate. Open windows and run a fan. Air and surface between 10 °C and 32 °C.
  4. Stir, don't thin. Stir well before and during use. Never add other paints or solvents.
  5. Apply 1 or 2 coats with a good sash brush for trim, railings and edges, or a roller or airless sprayer on flat doors and cabinets. Recoat after 16 hours.
  6. Go easy for a while. It reaches full satin in about a week. Wait 2 weeks before washing.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What can I paint with it?

Interior trim, doors and cabinets, plus metal: baseboards, casings, panelled doors, cabinet doors, and steel, wrought iron or aluminum railings, metal doors and frames. Benjamin Moore's Canadian label lists metal surfaces, but it's the same traditional oil-based enamel painters have used on interior woodwork for years. Prefer soap-and-water clean-up and less odour? Choose Advance.

Can I use it outside?

No, it's an interior enamel. For outdoor railings, gates, fences and doors, use Coronado Rust-A-Void, which is made for interior and exterior metal.

Do I need a primer?

New surfaces should be fully primed, and bare spots on previously painted surfaces spot primed. For bare wood, use Benjamin Moore's oil-based Fresh Start Undercoater and Primer/Sealer (K032). For steel and iron, Benjamin Moore recommends Ultra Spec HP Acrylic Metal Primer (FP04) or Super Spec HP Alkyd Metal Primer (KP06). Tint the primer close to your colour for the best hiding on big colour changes. Ask us if you're not sure which one you need.

Can I put it on galvanized metal or aluminum?

Not directly. Clean new galvanized metal or aluminum well with an oil and grease emulsifier, dull shiny areas that will see wear with very fine sandpaper or a synthetic steel wool pad, then prime with Ultra Spec HP Acrylic Metal Primer (FP04) before 1 or 2 coats.

Will it turn yellow?

All alkyd enamels yellow to some degree, and it happens faster in dark or poorly ventilated spots. It's most noticeable on whites and very pale colours, so keep that in mind for white trim or cabinets in a dim room.

How long does it take to dry?

Dry to the touch in 4 hours and ready to recoat in 16 hours at 25 °C and 50% humidity. It reaches its full satin finish in about a week and can be washed after 2 weeks. Cool, humid rooms take longer.

How much do I need?

A 3.79 L can covers 500–550 sq ft per coat and a 946 mL can roughly a quarter of that. It often covers in one coat over surfaces in good condition when you aren't making a big colour change. Otherwise plan on 2 coats. Use the calculator above.

Do I thin it, and how do I clean up?

Don't thin it and don't mix it with other paints. Clean brushes and rollers with mineral spirits right away. Oily rags can catch fire on their own, so lay them flat to dry outside or put them in water before you throw them out.

Is there a smell?

Yes. It's a solvent-based alkyd (373 g/L VOC), so there's a noticeable paint odour while you work. Use it only in a well-ventilated space: open windows and run a fan.

What colours can I get?

Ready-mixed White (01), or tinted to most Benjamin Moore colours (Color Stories colours aren't available in this paint). We can also match other brands. Some deep custom colours need a tinted primer underneath. Tinted paint is made to order, so it's final sale.

Sizes and shipping?

946 mL and 3.79 L. We ship across Canada, free on most orders over $249, or pick up free in Mississauga.
