Why Command
One tough finish for nearly everything.
Front doors, steel frames, handrails, shelving and cabinets all need paint that won't chip, stick or fade. Command is a single-component acrylic urethane, so you get that toughness without mixing two parts.
Sticks to almost anything
Tenacious adhesion on galvanized and non-ferrous metals, primed steel, wood, concrete, masonry, fibreglass, drywall and plaster.
Fast and tough
Touch dry in 15 minutes, recoat in 1 hour, back in service in 24 hours. Excellent abrasion resistance and early block resistance, so doors don't stick shut.
Inside and out
UV-resistant and flexible outdoors, and water-based with under 50 g/L VOC for indoor jobs. Satin or high gloss.
Not for immersion service, hot tire pickup on garage floors, over Kynar-type finishes, or as a whole-house paint over wood siding. Don't apply below 1.7 °C (35 °F) or at 90% humidity or higher. MPI 153/161 (satin), 154/164 (gloss).
Paint calculator
How much do I need?
Enter the width and height of what you're painting. We'll work out the cans, using 350 sq ft per 3.79 L, the low end of Benjamin Moore's coverage so you don't run short.
Set up for a 3 × 7 ft door, both sides (6 × 7 ft), with 2 coats. For railings, width × height gives a generous estimate. Painting a lot of doors or a facility? The calculator switches to the 18.9 L pail when it works out cheaper.

How to apply
Get a finish that lasts.
- Clean it. Remove grease, oil, dirt and wax with an oil and grease emulsifier like HP6000. Scrape or wire-brush loose paint, rust and mill scale.
- Dull the gloss. Sand glossy surfaces and old alkyd paint until they're fully dull with a sanding sponge. Can't dull it? Prime with HP1750 Waterborne Bonding Primer.
- Prime if needed. New steel and iron: HP1100 Acrylic Metal Primer. Drywall and plaster: an acrylic primer like Drywall Primer. Galvanized metal, aluminum and wood can take Command direct.
- Stir and apply 1 or 2 coats with a good brush, roller or airless sprayer, working from unpainted areas back into wet paint.
- Recoat after 1 hour. Light use after 4 hours, back in full service after 24 hours.
- Clean up right away with warm soapy water. Don't leave paint sitting in spray hoses or guns.
FAQ
Questions, answered.
What can I paint with Command?
Metal, wood, concrete, masonry, fibreglass, drywall and plaster, inside or out. It's made for things that take a beating: steel doors and frames, handrails, railings, shelving, cabinets, shutters, piping, stairs and ramps, curbs and safety markings.
Satin or gloss?
Gloss (85+ at 60°) is the shiniest and easiest to wipe clean, and gives doors and railings a classic high shine. Satin (20–30 at 60°) has a softer, lower sheen that hides surface flaws better. Both have the same toughness and dry times.
Can I use it outside?
Yes. It's an interior/exterior, UV-resistant acrylic urethane for doors, railings, shutters and trim. It isn't meant as a whole-house paint over wood siding. For that, use Aura Exterior or Regal Select Exterior.
Do I need a primer?
Often not. On galvanized and other non-ferrous metals, and on wood, Benjamin Moore allows 1–2 coats of Command direct after proper cleaning. New steel and iron should be primed with HP1100 Acrylic Metal Primer. Drywall and plaster need an acrylic primer, like Drywall Primer. Glossy or old alkyd paint must be sanded dull, or primed with HP1750 Waterborne Bonding Primer.
How fast does it dry?
Dry to the touch in 15 minutes, ready to recoat in 1 hour, foot traffic in 4 hours and back in service in 24 hours, at 25 °C and 50% humidity. Cool, humid weather slows it down.
How cold can it be when I paint?
Don't apply it if the air, surface or paint is below 1.7 °C (35 °F), or when humidity is 90% or higher. For the best results, Benjamin Moore lists a surface temperature of 10–37.7 °C (50–100 °F).
Can I use it on floors?
It's rated for foot traffic, stairs and ramps, but not for floors that get hot tire pickup, like garages. For a garage floor, see INSL-X GarageGuard.
What colours can I get?
Ready-mixed White (01) and Black (80) in Satin or Gloss, plus Bronzetone (62) in Satin, and Safety Yellow (10) and Safety Red in Gloss. Or get it tinted to most Benjamin Moore colours: pick your sheen, then search your colour. Tinted paint is made to order, so it's final sale.
How much do I need?
A 3.79 L can covers 350–450 sq ft per coat. A standard door is about 21 sq ft per side, so one can does several doors with two coats. Use the calculator above.
Does it smell? How do I clean up?
It's water-based, under 50 g/L VOC and CDPH emissions certified, so it's low odour. Clean tools with warm soapy water, and flush spray equipment with warm water right away.
Sizes and shipping?
3.79 L cans and 18.9 L pails. We ship across Canada, free on most orders over $249, or pick up free in Mississauga.
