Envirolak FAQ
1Which Envirolak primer should I use?
For refinishing over existing coatings or stain blocking, use T9000. For a 1K tannin blocking primer on wood, veneer or MDF, use 160-TB. For high fill and solid colour systems on MDF, use 170 or 170-TB, or 180 under dark colours.
2What temperature can I apply Envirolak coatings at?
Minimums on the data sheets: 16°C (60°F) for T9000 and 160-TB; 18°C (65°F) for Envirocryl 400, Envirocryl 500 and Envirothane 800; 20°C (68°F) for 170, 170-TB, 180 and Envirothane 100. The 125 and 200 sheets do not state one. In a cold Canadian shop, bring the material to room temperature first, as the T9000 sheet advises.
3Which topcoat goes over which primer?
Envirocryl 400 and Envirothane 800 can go over T9000 as a 1K, and the 200 as a 2K. The T9000 sheet says not to use a 100 series topcoat directly over it. The 160-TB sheet also says not to use 100 series over it. Envirothane 100 goes over raw wood, stains, or the 170, 170-TB and 180 primers.
4Do I need a hardener or crosslinker?
Not for 1K use. EnviroCat 100-LV is an isocyanate hardener used at about 5 to 10% depending on the product. It is a respiratory hazard, so use the PPE on the data sheet. EnviroCat 150 is used at about 3% and is designed for industrial use. Envirothane 800 is not recommended with isocyanate hardeners.
5How long does T9000 take to dry?
At 20°C (68°F): touch in 20 minutes, sand in 60 minutes, and recoat or topcoat in 4 hours. If you wait longer than 4 hours before a second coat, sand lightly with 320 grit. Stack overnight.
6Are Envirolak coatings low VOC?
They are water-based. The data sheets list VOC as low as 13 g/L for T9000 and 33 g/L for Envirothane 800. Other products are higher, so check the data sheet for the one you choose.
7Can Envirolak coatings be tinted?
Envirothane 200 and Envirocryl 400 can be tinted to off-white or pastel colours. Envirothane 180 is a neutral primer made for dark colours including black. Contact us for colour matching.
