Why PVA

Seal a whole basement without overspending.

New drywall needs a coat to seal the paper and joint compound before you paint. On big jobs, a PVA primer does that quickly and economically, so your finish coats go on even.

Coverage

How much do I need?

One 18.9 L pail covers about 1,500–2,000 sq ft per coat. Benjamin Moore says not to spread it thinner than 400 sq ft per 3.79 L, so plan on the low end.

1 pail

About 3 rooms

Three 12 × 12 ft rooms with 8 ft walls, walls and ceilings, at one coat.

2 pails

A basement

A typical 800 sq ft finished basement, walls and ceilings, at one coat.

Tip

Two coats as a finish

Using it as the finish coat? Double the amount, since it needs two coats.

How to apply

Prime it right.

  1. Finish the drywall. Sand joint compound smooth and remove all sanding dust.
  2. Check plaster. New plaster needs 30 days to cure and should be hard, with a pH of 10 or less. Knife off bumps instead of sanding.
  3. Spot prime before and after filling nail holes, cracks and dents.
  4. Roll or spray with a quality roller or airless sprayer. Don't spread it thinner than 400 sq ft per 3.79 L.
  5. Topcoat after 4 hours with 1–2 coats of finish paint, like Regal Select. Using it as the finish? Apply a second coat after 4 hours.
  6. Clean up with warm soapy water. Give spray equipment a final mineral spirits rinse to prevent rust.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is PVA primer?

PVA stands for polyvinyl acetate. It's a vinyl acrylic primer made for sealing new drywall quickly and economically. Benjamin Moore's Coronado PVA Primer/Finish is built for high-volume work: new construction, basements, renovations and rental turnovers.

Can I use it as the finish coat?

Yes. It's a primer and a finish. As a finish, apply two coats, 4 hours apart, for a uniform flat look. It's not for high-traffic areas that get washed or scrubbed often, so for living spaces topcoat it with a washable paint.

PVA Primer or Drywall Primer?

Both seal new drywall. Coronado PVA Primer is the economical choice for big production jobs and only comes in 18.9 L pails. Benjamin Moore Drywall Primer comes in 3.79 L cans too, and is ready to topcoat in 2 hours instead of 4.

How much does a pail cover?

An 18.9 L pail covers about 1,500–2,000 sq ft per coat (300–400 sq ft per 3.79 L). Don't spread it thinner than that. That's roughly three 12 × 12 ft rooms, walls and ceilings, at one coat.

How long before I can paint over it?

Dry to the touch in 30 minutes and ready to recoat or topcoat in 4 hours at 25 °C and 50% humidity. Cool, humid conditions take longer.

Can I spray it?

Yes. Use an airless sprayer at 1,500–3,000 PSI with a .013–.017 tip. If needed for spraying, thin with up to 15% clean water.

Can it be tinted?

Benjamin Moore allows light tinting with up to 59 mL of colourant per 3.79 L, which helps when your topcoat is a darker colour. We sell it in white. Want it tinted? Ask us.

Is it low odour?

It's a water-based vinyl acrylic at 19 g/L VOC, CDPH emissions certified, and it cleans up with warm soapy water.

What surfaces is it for?

New interior drywall (walls and ceilings) and fully cured plaster. For stains, glossy surfaces or exterior work, use Fresh Start High-Hiding All Purpose Primer instead.

Shipping and pickup?

Sold in 18.9 L pails. We ship across Canada, free on most orders over $249, or pick up free in Mississauga.
