Sico ProLuxe 23 Top Coat RE – Translucent Satin Exterior Wood Finish (formerly Sikkens Cetol 23)

Sico ProLuxe 23 Top Coat RE is the premium translucent satin top coat in the ProLuxe system for exterior vertical wood: log homes, siding, trim, doors and garage doors. Applied in two coats over ProLuxe 1 Primary Coat, it builds a water-repellent, UV-protective film that shows off the grain and resists cracking and peeling. Later, it's the product you use for maintenance coats.

Key Features

  • Durable satin top coat that builds film over ProLuxe 1.
  • UV absorbers with a translucent tint that shows the grain.
  • Water-repellent and weather-resistant.
  • Easy maintenance: clean and add a coat when the sheen dulls.
  • Reduced-emission (RE) formula.

Where to Use It

Log homes, wood siding, trim, doors and garage doors, always over a coat of ProLuxe 1 Primary Coat. Not for decks, floors, fences or outdoor furniture. For fences and furniture, use 2 coats of ProLuxe 1 on its own. Exterior use only.

Colours and Sizes

946 mL and 3.79 L in Natural Oak, Dark Oak, Mahogany, Butternut, Cedar, Natural and Teak. Natural is also available in an 18.9 L pail (special order). Match the colour of your ProLuxe 1 base.

The ProLuxe 3-Coat System

One coat of ProLuxe 1 Primary Coat for penetration and colour, then two coats of ProLuxe 23 for the protective satin film. ProLuxe 23 is not a stand-alone stain and must go over ProLuxe 1. For decks, use a penetrating oil like Penofin Stain & Sealer.

Application Guide
  1. Prepare and prime. Bare wood must be cleaned, power-washed, dried to 18% moisture or less, sanded with 80–120 grit, and given one coat of ProLuxe 1 Primary Coat.
  2. Wait 24 hours after ProLuxe 1.
  3. Apply the first coat of ProLuxe 23 at 10–32 °C, ideally with a natural bristle brush, working with the grain.
  4. Apply the second coat at least 24 hours later.
  5. Maintain. When the sheen looks dull, and before the wood starts to grey, clean the surface and add a maintenance coat of ProLuxe 23.
  6. Dispose of rags safely. Oil-soaked rags can catch fire. Put them in a sealed, water-filled metal container.
FAQ
1Can I use ProLuxe 23 on its own?

No. ProLuxe 1 Primary Coat must go on the bare wood first, then two coats of ProLuxe 23. The only exception is maintenance coats over an existing ProLuxe system.

2Is ProLuxe 23 the same as Sikkens Cetol 23?

Yes. Sikkens Cetol 23 Plus RE is now sold as Sico ProLuxe 23 Top Coat RE.

3Can I use it on my deck or fence?

No. ProLuxe 23 is for vertical surfaces like siding, logs, trim and doors. For fences and outdoor furniture, use 2 coats of ProLuxe 1. For decks, use a penetrating deck oil.

4How much do I need?

You need enough for two coats. Each 3.79 L covers 250–350 sq ft on smooth wood, so 1,000 sq ft of siding takes about 6–8 gallons of ProLuxe 23, plus 3–4 gallons of ProLuxe 1.

5How often do I need to recoat?

Add a maintenance coat when the sheen dulls, before the wood greys. That's typically every 2–3 years on sunny south and west sides and 3–4 years on north and east sides.

6Why does my colour need to match ProLuxe 1?

Both coats are tinted, and the final colour builds up through the layers. Using the same colour gives an even, predictable result.

7How long between coats?

At least 24 hours between each coat in good drying conditions. Cool or humid weather takes longer. Don't apply below 10 °C.
