Why Fast Sanding

A smooth finish starts with a primer you can sand.

New wood raises its grain when it's primed, and brush marks show through gloss paint. The fix is to sand the primer. This one is ready in an hour and sands to a fine powder instead of gumming up your paper.

How to apply

Prime it right.

  1. Prep the surface. Clean off dirt, grease and wax. Scrape loose paint, feather-sand the edges and dull any glossy areas. Remove all sanding dust.
  2. Check plaster. New plaster and masonry need 30 days to cure. Never sand plaster.
  3. Stir well and apply by brush, quality roller or airless sprayer. Don't add other paints or solvents.
  4. Sand after 1 hour with fine paper or a sanding sponge to knock down raised grain and brush marks. Wipe off the dust.
  5. Topcoat with your finish paint, like ADVANCE for doors, trim and cabinets, or Regal Select for walls.
  6. Clean up with warm soapy water. Give spray equipment a final mineral spirits rinse to prevent rust.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is Fast Sanding Primer for?

It's Benjamin Moore's interior acrylic primer for jobs where the finish has to be glass-smooth: new wood doors, trim and cabinets, plus drywall and plaster. It sands to a powder in about an hour, so you can knock down raised grain and brush marks and get on with your topcoat the same day.

How long before I can sand it?

About 1 hour at 25 °C and 50% humidity. It's dry to the touch in 30 minutes and ready to recoat in 1–2 hours. Cool, humid rooms take longer.

Fast Sanding Primer or Drywall Primer?

For walls and ceilings of new drywall, Drywall Primer is made for the job. Choose Fast Sanding Primer when you're priming wood and want to sand between coats for a smooth, furniture-like finish on doors, trim and cabinets.

Can I use it on cabinets?

Yes, on new or properly prepared cabinets. Clean them well, dull any gloss with a light sanding, then prime, sand smooth and topcoat. It's not made to block severe stains.

Will it block stains or knots?

No. It's not designed for severe stains, tannin bleed from woods like cedar, or smoke damage. Use Fresh Start High-Hiding All Purpose Primer instead.

Can it be tinted?

Benjamin Moore allows it to be tinted toward your topcoat colour, which helps hiding when you're going darker. We sell it online in white. Want it tinted? Ask us and tell us your topcoat colour.

How much do I need?

A 3.79 L can covers 350–450 sq ft per coat, and an 18.9 L pail covers about five times that. Use the calculator above.

Can I spray it?

Yes. It's built for production work. Use an airless sprayer at 1,500–2,500 PSI with a .013–.017 tip. It normally doesn't need thinning; if it does, add up to 236 mL of clean water per 3.79 L. Never add other paints or solvents.

Can I use it outside?

No. Fast Sanding Primer is for interior use only.

Sizes and shipping?

3.79 L cans and 18.9 L pails. We ship across Canada, free on most orders over $249, or pick up free in Mississauga.
