How to choose

How to narrow down 1,680 colours

With this many options, a little structure goes a long way. Here's how we help customers get to a shortlist.

01Start with a family

Pick the colour family first, then the shade. On our swatch page you can filter Classics by whites, greys, greens, blues and more.

02Check the LRV

Light reflectance runs from 0 (black) to 100. Around 55 and up suits main walls; under 20 is a deep colour for accents, cabinets and doors.

03Watch the undertone

Greys can lean green, blue or violet; beiges can lean pink or yellow. Compare swatches next to your floors, counters and fabrics.

04Test big

A chip looks lighter than a full wall. Shortlist with swatches, then paint a large tester patch and check it morning, noon and night.

Questions

Benjamin Moore Classics FAQ

What is the Benjamin Moore Classics collection?

It's Benjamin Moore's largest colour collection: 1,680 colours numbered 001 to 1680. Benjamin Moore describes them as reliable, timeless hues, and they cover every colour family, from soft pastels and whites to deep, saturated shades.

What are the most popular Benjamin Moore Classics colours?

Benjamin Moore's current trending list includes Antique Pewter (1560), Terra Mauve (105), Vintage Vogue (462), Santorini Blue (1634), October Mist (1495) and French Beret (1610). October Mist was also Benjamin Moore's 2022 Colour of the Year.

Is Antique Pewter the same as Revere Pewter?

No. Revere Pewter (HC-172, LRV 55.05) is a light, warm greige from the Historical Colours collection, used on whole-house walls. Antique Pewter (1560, LRV 25.4) is a much deeper, earthy grey from Classics, better for cabinets, accents and exteriors. Order both swatches if you're unsure which one you've been told about.

Why do Classics colours have plain numbers?

Classics use plain numbers like 912 or 1560. Other collections use a prefix: HC for Historical Colours, OC for Off-White, AF for Affinity and CSP for Colour Stories, while Colour Preview numbers look like 2133-60. The number is the quickest way to make sure you get exactly the right colour.

Which Benjamin Moore paints can be tinted in Classics colours?

Classics colours can be mixed in Benjamin Moore's interior and exterior paints, including Aura, Regal Select and ben. A few very deep or bright shades may need a specific product or base, so ask us and we'll confirm before we mix.

What does LRV mean?

LRV (light reflectance value) measures how much light a colour reflects, from 0 (black) to 100 (pure white). Classics run from about 7 to 88. Around 55 and up suits most main walls; under 20 is a deep colour best for accents, cabinets, doors or a cozy room.

Is there a Benjamin Moore Classics fan deck?

Yes. The Benjamin Moore Classics fan deck has all 1,680 colours, which is handy if you're choosing colours for a whole house or working with clients.

Are the swatches free?

Yes. Benjamin Moore colour swatches are free, up to 10 per order. You only pay shipping, which is calculated at checkout.
