Osmo Oil Stain for Interior Wood Floors & Furniture
Osmo Oil Stain is a transparent, plant-oil colour stain for interior wood. It works as a coloured primer for floors, stairs and furniture. One thin coat keeps the grain showing, and a second coat deepens the colour. It must be sealed with a clear Osmo finish such as Polyx-Oil.
Key Features
- Flexible colour strength: one coat for a transparent look, two for a more intense one.
- Ten colours, from Natural and White to Graphite and Black.
- Apply with a roller, flat brush, pad or cloth. Rollers and brushes suit floors.
- Microporous finish that won't crack, peel, flake or blister.
- Toy-safe when fully dry (EN 71.3).
- Good coverage: 24-48 m² per litre (260-516 sq ft) per coat.
Where to Use It
Interior solid wood and plank floors, blockstrip, OSB and cork floors, stairs and furniture. Interior use only. Not a finish on its own: it needs a clear Osmo topcoat. Not for exterior wood.
Colours and Sizes
- 3501 White, 3512 Silver Grey, 3514 Graphite, 3516 Jatoba, 3518 Light Grey
- 3519 Natural, 3541 Havanna, 3543 Cognac, 3564 Tobacco, 3590 Black
Sizes: 125 mL and 1 L.
Oil Stain or Polyx-Oil?
Oil Stain adds colour and is applied first. Osmo Polyx-Oil is the clear hardwax oil that goes on top and gives the wear protection. For uncoloured wood, use Polyx-Oil alone.
Specs & Coverage
- 125 mL: about 3-6 m² (32-65 sq ft) per coat
- 1 L: about 24-48 m² (260-516 sq ft) per coat
- Coverage depends on the wood. Sanded, planed wood gives the figures above. Rough or absorbent wood takes more.

Application Guide
- Prep. Wood must be clean, dry and frost-free, under 18% moisture. Remove old paint and lacquer completely, fill gaps, sand to the grits above and vacuum off all dust.
- Test first on a hidden spot or offcut. Wood species change the final colour.
- Warm the room. In a Canadian winter, heat the space above 5 °C and ventilate.
- Stir well. Don't thin.
- Apply thinly along the grain with a microfibre roller or flat brush. Spread evenly and avoid overlaps.
- Dry about 12 hours with good ventilation. Apply a second thin coat if you want deeper colour.
- Seal with clear Osmo Polyx-Oil once the stain is fully dry.
FAQ
1How much Oil Stain do I need for a 200 sq ft room?
One coat on 200 sq ft needs about 0.4 to 0.8 L, using Osmo's 260-516 sq ft per litre. Two coats need up to about 1.5 L, so buy 2 x 1 L to be safe. Buy the Polyx-Oil topcoat separately.
2Do I have to top-coat Oil Stain?
Yes. Osmo says it needs a clear Osmo topcoat for protection against wear, moisture and spills. Use Osmo Polyx-Oil.
3One coat or two?
One thin coat gives a transparent colour with the grain showing. Two thin coats give greater intensity. Test on an offcut of your wood first.
4What is the best applicator for a floor?
Osmo recommends a microfibre roller or flat brush for floors. White pads and cloths put on very little product and suit furniture and small pieces, not heavy-wear floors.
5Can I apply it over varnish, polyurethane or paint?
No. Osmo says old paints and lacquers must be completely removed. Sand back to bare wood. Old microporous oil finishes need thorough cleaning.
6Can I use it outdoors?
No. It is an interior product. For exterior wood see Osmo Decking Oil or Osmo UV-Protection Oil.
7How long until I can walk on the floor?
Osmo gives drying as about 12 hours per coat, and the full system needs 2-3 weeks to cure before damp-mopping or rugs. Colder, humid rooms dry slower.
8Is it safe for children's furniture?
Osmo states it is tested to EN 71.3 for toys when fully dry. Let it dry and cure fully before use. Questions? Contact us.
