Messmer's UV Plus for Hardwood Decks

Messmer's UV Plus for Hardwood Decks is an oil-based penetrating stain and oil finish made for dense exotic hardwoods such as ipe, mahogany, teak, tigerwood and Kebony. It soaks into the wood instead of forming a film, so it won't peel or flake. Transparent iron oxide pigments absorb UV while the grain shows through. To refresh it, clean the deck and reapply.

Key Features

  • Made for dense hardwoods: ipe, mahogany, brazilian redwood, massaranduba, meranti, teak, tigerwood and Kebony.
  • Penetrating, non-film-forming finish that won't peel or flake.
  • Transparent UV protection that keeps the natural wood look.
  • Mildew-resistant coating.
  • High solids fill the pores for water repellency without wax.
  • One coat, and no stripping or sanding when you recoat.

Where to Use It

Exterior hardwood decks, and vertical surfaces in dense hardwood. Not for interior use. It dries to a natural matte look, not a gloss. For cedar, pine and pressure-treated lumber, see Messmer's UV Plus Wood Stain.

Colours and Sizes

  • Natural: clear-toned protection that keeps the wood's own colour.
  • Red Mahogany: adds a warm reddish tone.

946 mL and 3.79 L in both colours. 18.9 L is available by special order.

UV Plus for Hardwoods or Penofin?

UV Plus for Hardwoods is a one-coat penetrating oil in two colours. Penofin Exterior Hardwood Formula is another penetrating oil for exotic hardwoods. For softwoods and pressure-treated wood, use Messmer's UV Plus Wood Stain instead.

Application Guide
  1. Let new wood age. New hardwood needs at least 6–8 weeks of weathering. Previously treated wood must be weathered enough to absorb the oil.
  2. Clean the deck. Always clean grey or dirty wood with a wood cleaner and brightener, then let it dry 24–48 hours.
  3. Mix well. Stir in everything settled at the bottom and box (intermix) cans.
  4. Check conditions. Apply at 10–32 °C out of hot sun, with no rain expected for 24–48 hours.
  5. Brush or roll one coat, keeping a wet edge along the full length of each board. Don't stop mid-board.
  6. Wipe off the excess that hasn't soaked in within 30–60 minutes, or it will dry shiny and tacky.
  7. Handle rags safely. Oil-soaked rags can catch fire on their own. Lay them flat to dry outdoors or seal them in a water-filled metal container.
FAQ
1How much do I need for a 12 × 16 ft ipe deck?

The floor is 192 sq ft. Smooth boards take 200–300 sq ft per 3.79 L, so one 3.79 L can covers one coat. Add a 946 mL for railings, edges and any rough areas.

2How do I prepare new hardwood?

Let it weather 6–8 weeks, then clean it with a wood cleaner and brightener and let it dry 24–48 hours.

3How long should I wait before staining new boards?

At least 6–8 weeks, per Messmer's. Then clean and let them dry.

4What colours does it come in?

Natural and Red Mahogany. Natural keeps the wood's own colour. Red Mahogany adds a warmer, redder tone.

5Can I apply it over another stain?

Over a weathered penetrating oil, yes, after cleaning. Previously treated wood must be weathered and clean enough to absorb the oil. It won't soak into paint or film-forming finishes, which need to be removed first.

6How often do I recoat?

Messmer's expects it to last about 1–2 years on hardwood decks, depending on sun, weather and exposure. To recoat, clean the wood and reapply. No stripping or sanding.

7When is the best time to stain a deck in Canada?

Late spring to early fall, on a dry day between 10 and 32 °C with no rain for 24–48 hours. Avoid hot afternoon sun on the boards.

8How do I dispose of oily rags?

Oil-soaked rags can heat up and ignite on their own. Lay them flat outdoors to dry, or put them in a sealed metal container with water before you throw them out.
