Cabot Australian Timber Oil Wood Stain

Cabot Australian Timber Oil is a translucent, oil-based wood stain for decks, siding, railings, fences and outdoor furniture. It was first made for dense Australian hardwoods such as tallowwood, cambara and merbau. This is the water-reducible #19400 series: it has less than 275 g/L VOC, and you clean up with warm soapy water. One coat is all it needs.

Key Features

  • Three-oil blend: linseed oil for penetration, long-oil alkyds for durability and tung oil for colour depth and water repellency.
  • Translucent iron-oxide pigments add colour and UV protection while the grain stays visible.
  • One coat only to apply.
  • Mildew-inhibiting film, plus a simple soap-and-water clean-up.
  • Ready-mixed colours. Do not tint.

Where to Use It

Exterior decks, siding, railings, fences and outdoor furniture, including dense hardwoods like ipe, mahogany and tallowwood, and other exterior wood. Wood only, exterior only. Not for painted or sealed surfaces, and not for hot surfaces or direct sun.

Colours and Sizes

  • 946 mL: Natural, Honey Teak, Jarrah Brown.
  • 3.78 L: Natural, Amberwood, Honey Teak, Mahogany Flame, Jarrah Brown.

These are Cabot's factory-mixed colours, not tinted to Benjamin Moore colours. Test a hidden spot first.

Cabot or Penofin Hardwood?

Both are penetrating oils for hardwood decks. Penofin Exterior Hardwood Formula dries to the touch in 3–4 hours, covers 400–500 sq ft per gallon, needs a wipe-off after 20–30 minutes and cleans up with mineral spirits. Cabot needs no wipe-off, takes about 24 hours to dry and cleans up with soap and water.

Application Guide
  1. Pick your window. In Canada that is late spring to early fall, when air and surface stay at 10 °C or above for 48 hours. Skip direct sun, hot boards and rain.
  2. Prep. Wood must be clean and bone dry. Scrape loose old stain, sand the edges and scrub off dirt and mildew with Cabot Wood Cleaner. Use Wood Brightener on badly weathered wood.
  3. Let it dry 24–48 hours after cleaning.
  4. Test a small area, then stir well. Blend all cans for large jobs.
  5. Apply one thin coat to 1–3 boards at a time, working the full board length to avoid lap marks. Do not over-apply. Back-brush any sprayed stain right away.
  6. Dispose of rags safely. Soaked rags can catch fire, so lay them in a sealed, water-filled metal container.
FAQ
1How much stain do I need for a 12 × 16 ft deck?

The deck floor is 192 sq ft. At 250–350 sq ft per 3.78 L, one can covers it with some left over. Rough wood uses more, and railings and steps are extra, so buy a second can for those.

2Is it oil-based or water-based?

It's an oil-based stain made water reducible. The #19400 series has less than 275 g/L VOC and cleans up with warm soapy water.

3Which colour should I choose?

The stain is translucent, so the final tone depends on your wood. Test a hidden spot, or ask us.

4Can I apply it over old stain?

Only over bare or weathered wood. Scrape off loose stain, sand the edges and clean the wood. Don't apply it over painted or sealed surfaces.

5When can I stain new pressure-treated wood?

Cabot gives no fixed wait. Sprinkle water on the boards. If it beads up, sand lightly or wait a few months until the treatment wears off.

6What's the best weather to apply it in Canada?

Dry weather with air and surface at 10 °C or above, and no drop below 10 °C for 48 hours. Avoid direct sun and hot boards. Expect about 24 hours to dry.

7How often do I need to recoat?

Cabot says the finish typically lasts 1–3 years on decks and 2–4 years on siding and fences. Check it each spring.

8How do I clean up and handle oily rags?

Wash brushes with warm soapy water. Rags, steel wool and sanding dust soaked with this stain can catch fire, so place them in a sealed, water-filled metal container.
